Labor Department reports that new jobless claims drop more than expected.

New jobless claims dropped by a significant number last week. Initial jobless claims dropped to a seasonally adjusted 550,000 for the week ending August 1. This number was down from the upwardly revised figure of 588,000 for the previous week. Analysts had been expecting the number to be in the 580.000 range.
